Week 4 Recap

Week 4 Recap

By far, this was my worst week of picks. It's my own fault in a couple of those picks, but I wasn't sure Tennessee was as bad as they looked against Florida. The VOLS had a real shot in this game and they choked. Butch Jones couldn't have asked for better play from his defense. They kept it close and played tough but the offense is where the real problem lies with this team.

So, Florida got the win. Driskel (Florida's starting QB), broke his leg and is out for the rest of the season. Where does this team go from here? The Gators have looked terrible in each and every game this season. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? There might be..... and it's hard to tell if this team is headed in the right direction. One thing is for sure, though..... Driskel will not be the one to lead the offense. Murphy came in and did a nice job at bringing a little spark to the offense...... and I emphasize the word 'little'. It was enough to get the win and that is what counts at this point.

Maryland dismantled West Virginia. Are the TERPS for real? Sure, we get it.... West Virginia is not the best measuring stick for Maryland to use, but it's all they have at this point of the season. This team hasn't had this great of start in years..... So maybe it's time we start giving the Terrapins a little bit of respect. It wasn't one of those games where one team has a few lucky plays and pulls out a 10 or 14 point win....... or a game where it leaves you saying "it could have gone either way"...... This was complete and total domination from start to finish.... and it was in terrible weather conditions. You better believe the media, and myself, will be paying a little more attention to the TERPS as the season progresses.

Arizona State comes up short at Stanford. This was The Cardinal's first real test of the season. Arizona State has a bright future ahead if they can keep heading in the direction they are going..... but this game was telling, in that Stanford is still getting the right pieces to the puzzle. We all had our questions about Stanford heading into this game. They have looked questionable against lesser talented teams, so we had every right to think they would struggle against a team like Arizona State. Instead, Stanford came out and won in convincing fashion..... Almost looking identical to last year's team. We saw glimpses of that greatness, now the question is 'can they maintain that high level?'

Auburn is improving but not enough to take down LSU. Is anybody paying attention to LSU? The spotlight has been on Texas A&M and Alabama recently, but LSU has made huge improvements from last season. I will be the first to admit that I really thought this LSU team would struggle this year. Clearly they have made all the right moves during the offseason, and now they appear to be ready to make a statement in the SEC West. Shifting away from LSU a little bit..... Auburn looked okay. Are they anywhere near where they want to be....well no... but at this point, you can't be upset with the way they have played this season. They have plenty of room for improvement but I don't think they are the pushover they were a year ago.

Clemson survives the Wolf-Pack last Thursday night. This was an important game. This was supposed to be one of those games that Clemson 'pulls a Clemson'. Well, they didn't..... Is this a turning point for the Tigers? Are they the team ready to live up to the hype? Sadly we won't know the answer to those questions for at least a few more weeks. For Clemson fans, you better hope this is the season they can win a BCS bowl at the very least.....because I think there will be some coaching changes in the upcoming offseason. How long do you think it will be before Clemson's offensive coord. Chad Morris will get a head coach job offer? Who is to say he hasn't already? Maybe the right job hasn't come calling.....yet. The magic number for a coordinator to get noticed is 3..... 3 full seasons at having your offense (or defense) performing at a high level is going to get you some job offers. Much like Florida State was last season, Clemson has some high expectations to live up to...... the season may be on the line for Clemson come October 19 and the pressure will be on the Tigers to beat conference rival Florida State.

Speaking of Florida State...... I only mention their game from this weekend because it was a game where redshirt freshman, Jameis Winston, proved to be human after all..... He was 10-19 passing with 2 TDs. Not bad numbers by any means, but it wasn't anything like what he had been doing in his previous two games. Even Winston admitted after the game that he was greedy. He wanted so bad to make the throws to his first reads instead of hitting the second and third choices of guys who were wide open. And again, I know he is going to have his growing pains, and the media should acknowledge that as well..... However it seems as though they want this guy to be invincible. The warm-up games are over for Winston. We will see a very talented QB in the coming games. Certainly, we are all anxious to see Winston play in some big games.
