Week 4 College Football Chatter

Week 4 College Football Chatter

I want start this segment off by looking at coaches that are on the hot seat. Three weeks into the season and there are plenty of coaches that are sweating it out. Which one gets fired first? Who steps down before being fired? Which one survives the rest of 2013?

Coaches on the HOT SEAT:

Lane Kiffin, USC

Mack Brown, Texas

Bo Pelini, Nebraska

Honorable mention goes to Mark Richt. Just think if Georgia had lost to South Carolina.... He'd be on this list, but he managed to save himself....AGAIN. If there has been a coach on the seat multiple times and survived, it's Mark Richt.

As far the coach with the hotter seat, I think it has to Lane Kiffin. Mack Brown is under fire, no doubt, but Kiffin is in worse shape. I think it will be tight between those two over the coming weeks. One week it could be Brown, the next it could be Kiffin just because of who they lose to each week.
Nebraska coach, Bo Pelini, is the wild card in this mix. Everybody has heard about the comments from an audio tape from 2011. After those comments and  CHOKING on their own field after being up 21-3, wouldn't you think he's gone? Well, at some other Universities, I think he would be..... Sadly, Nebraska is stubborn and they will hold onto this guy a little longer. If Nebraska struggles more in the B1G Ten this season, then maybe he gets canned at the end of the season.

So there are the big name guys on the Hot Seat.....What about the coaches that have the seat warmers on?

Coaches with Seat Warmers On:

Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech

Bob Stoops*, Oklahoma (I'll Explain)

Okay, so maybe it's a bit of stretch on these two coaches, but hear me out. Beamer has to be starting to feel the pressure. Virginia Tech escaped ECU this past weekend 15-10. Tech's defense won't be able to carry them the whole season. This team has been on a downward spiral for the last two seasons. How much longer does Virginia Tech give Beamer to turn things around?

Bob Stoops may not seem like his job is under fire, but I have to say that Oklahoma fans are tired of losing that 'one game' each season. Don't misunderstand me....If the seat warmers are on, that doesn't mean he is in 'job threatening' trouble this season....But I think it would spill over into the start of next season. This season, he may lose three, four, or more games. However, I think he survives the season because of one signature game. Playing against Texas...... If Oklahoma wins that game and wins the BIG-12, then Stoops lives to fight another season. Stoops should send a 'Thank You' card to Mack Brown.

Conference Chatter

By far one of the best articles I have read this season...... An article where Kirk Herbstreit calls out the SEC to claim their loss to Oregon this past weekend. I will post the link below.
He finally addresses something I have been screaming for the last couple of seasons. Don't believe me? Scroll back through the archives of this blog and read the posts that I have called out the SEC for losing to nonconference opponents and then SEC fans ignore it.
Basically Kirk says that the SEC has 14 teams and that when an SEC team wins the Title, all 14 teams carry this huge SEC Banner like all 14 teams 'helped' win that Title. You know what I am talking about.... Prime example are Georgia fans chanting 'SEC SEC SEC!' when BAMA beats Notre Dame in the Title game. Or when BAMA fans are chanting the same thing as Auburn wins the Title with Cam Newton..... Are you kidding me? I am a Florida State fan, and if Miami or Clemson are playing in the National Championship it would tick me off.....They are my rivals and I don't want them winning it over my team..... Sure there is some conference pride in the mix.... But what ever happened to hating rivals? It should make you sick when your team's rival is getting better every season and makes it to the big game. Sure, when Clemson was playing Georgia, I pulled for Clemson... You know why? Because it would make the FSU vs Clemson game that much bigger. I'm not saying don't pull for your conference....It clearly is a personal preference. That's fine. But at least be consistent when a team from your conference gets blown out. PAC-12 fans claim it when it happens. BIG-12 fans claim it.....The ACC certainly has to claim it when it happens.....What makes the SEC any different? Maybe the medial helps with that image, but fans play a key part in that as well. Somehow the SEC fans feel they are immune to having to claim their losses against nonconference foes.
