Games to Watch Week 2

Key Games to Watch Week 2

No Top 25 matchups this week but there are a few games that will be good to watch. Game One: I mentioned Texas A&M hosting Florida. I am taking Texas A&M in that one.

Game Two: Nebraska travels to UCLA.

This may be a little more interesting than you would think. Both teams put up big numbers in week 1. Nebraska looked like the stumbled into a passing game. And yes, they did it with Taylor Martinez at QB. UCLA looked explosive. Granted, it was against Rice, but Nebraska doesn't exactly have much room to talk about beating Southern Miss.

Taylor Martinez made some plays, and it wasn't with his legs. He threw a career high 5 touchdowns. Early in this game, however, Nebraska struggled to keep control of the game. And, this game came at a high price. Rex Burkhead injured his knee and it will most likely keep him out against UCLA. You know the coaching staff would love to be able to win this game comfortably without Burkhead. But UCLA is not Southern Miss. The Bruins are a better team than Southern Miss. This game has all the ingredients to run down to the final minutes. I am going to have to pick Nebraska in this one. Even though both teams look very explosive on offense, I think the difference will be Nebraska's defense. It isn't anything special, yet. But it certainly is better than what UCLA faced in week 1. Nebraska wins 41-34.

 Game Three: Missouri hosts Georgia

Missouri isn't as excited as Texas A&M for their first SEC game, but it will be loud either way. I think Missouri is a little more nervous. Missouri fans, I don't think, were as excited about the move to the SEC.
Georgia is coming off a mediocre performance against Buffalo. The Bulldogs looked everything but impressive on defense. On the offense, they looked like they were going through the motions at points during the game. Yes, they scored 45 points, but it's Buffalo. It was a game that should have turned out like many of the other cupcake matchups in week 1. 60-10, 56-7, or at the very least a 45-0 game. The defense has to shape up if they want to win on the road.
Missouri, the key will be just taking what the defense gives them. They don't need to make big plays every play. They just need to keep drives going and take anywhere from 9 to 13 plays per scoring drive. Missouri has the players to hang with Georgia. And they have the homefield advantage. Keep this game on your radar on Saturday, I think this game has the best chance for an upset. I don't consider Texas A&M over the Gators an upset. It's too early to judge a team that is at the lower end of the Top 25 and a team that hasn't taken one snap yet this season. However, Missouri beating a Top 10 team? Yes, that's BIG.

Coach Mark Richt better have the wrinkles ironed out before this game. This is a huge game for Georgia. An early SEC loss would make the SEC East race a huge mess.
I am rolling with Georgia. I think Richt is a very smart coach and will have his team ready for the road test. The offense will score, the defense just has to manage to get a few stops and not get into a shoot-out. Bulldogs take it 31-21.

Game Four: Duke at Stanford.

I know, I know. I will try to not spend too much time on this matchup, but it has to be on the list. Think to last season's matchup when the Cardinal had Andrew Luck at QB. Duke gave Stanford fits last season. Now, no more 'Luck'.
Don't be surprised if Duke shocks the nation in this game. It's at Stanford, and that's the only reason I think Stanford escapes this game.  Moving on.....

Game Five: Penn State at Virginia.

It couldn't get any worse for Penn State, could it? Yes, I believe it can and I think it will this week. Virginia is much improved. Penn State is in a world of trouble. The players can't stay focused. The team's confidence is hanging by a thread. If Penn State doesn't get control soon, their season will be a painful one.
The Nittany Lions need to take what they did in the first half against Ohio and keep that going through four quarters against Virginia. If Penn State can get a two or three score lead early in this game, I think they can cruise the rest of the game.
For Virginia, they have to come out strong and weather the storm early. They are going to get Penn State's best shot early in this game. And if the Cavaliers can keep it close early, I believe they will out last the Nittany Lions.
I have Virginia. 21-17. Close game to the end but edge goes to the Cavaliers.

Game Six: Miami at Kansas State

The Hurricanes showed a lot of character in their season opener, beating Boston College. I'm not sure they will have as much offense in this road test, though.
Kansas State will certainly play better defense than Boston College. Duke Johnson for Miami had a huge day. Seven carries for 135 yards including two touchdown runs of 50 yards or more. Miami distracted by all the issues and violations of their program? I don't think they are.....I mean, when was the last time we heard how the NCAA investigations were going? Miami can thank Penn State for drawing the attention away from them.

Kansas State is looking to expand on last season's success. They beat Miami last season. And I believe the Wildcats will do it again this season. Kansas State has the better offense and the better defense, and I don't see the Hurricanes having the success they had against Boston College. Wildcats win 34-20.
