     Alabama, National Champions?

While Bama fans enjoy their win over the LSU Tigers, Saban is preparing for Texas A&M. Do the Aggies even stand a chance in this game? According to many 'experts', nobody stands a chance against the Crimson Tide. In their minds, Alabama has already won the BCS Title Game. Are they that good? Are we going to see our first BCS Title Repeat?

Alabama has taken care of business each and every week. Their only slip, if you can call it that, was against LSU, and they still won the game. But how good is LSU? Is LSU that same team that stuggled against Towson? Are they the same team that couldn't score a TD against Auburn? I think the answer to these questions is simply 'no'. They have improved and they are a much better team than they showed early on in the season. LSU is the only team that Bama can claim real credibility over. Bama has beat up on greatly inferior team all season long, and all we hear from fans is ,"it's because Bama is that good, and they are that much better than everyone else".

If that is true, Bama should've been a little more impressive over LSU. Before I get ripped for questioning Bama, and being labeled as a 'Bama Hater'......I have great respect for what Bama is doing, and what Saban has been able to do in a short period of time. I believe Bama is a top 3 team. They very well could be the best team in the country, but as Dan Patrick mentioned on his show on Monday morning, "Alabama is really good, but I am not sure they deserve the #1 ranking through this point of the season". He went on to explain that other teams have more impressive wins up to this point of the season. He also said that Bama very well could win it all, but that the other teams deserve some credit at this point.

If not Alabama at the top through week 10, then who? Does Kansas State have a case? Oregon? Notre Dame? Of the undefeated teams left, maybe Kansas State and Oregon have the best case for the #1 spot. Notre Dame hasn't been nearly as impressive, especially this past week against Pitt. Going by strength of schedule thus far, Kansas State may deserve that spot. Oregon has looked good, but they haven't had to play the really tough games yet......but is that because they are just that good? Is Oregon blowing everyone out because they are that much better than everyone they have played? That certainly is the answer Bama fans would give in Bama's case. Why doesn't Oregon deserve the same respect? They are scoring 50+ points a game. If Alabama is as good as everyone seems to think, why hasn't Bama's offense put up the really big numbers? Now look, I am not a numbers guy.....if your team gets the win, then the numbers don't matter. I only mention the numbers side of it because that's the argument/point that many Duck fans bring up in the conversation.

Kansas State may not have an argument in this for much longer. With Klein recovering from a concussion, Kansas State may struggle against TCU this week. The #2 spot is Kansas State's spot to lose. The Wild Cats have to be impressive in every game they have left if they are going to have a spot in the BCS Title game. Oregon is going to apply lots of pressure on the polls with their wins down the stretch. It's a fight to see who gets a shot at Alabama.

In my Preseason Top 10 countdown, I had a post about Alabama. While I had Bama at #3 in my preseason poll, I still thought that this was Saban's best chance to repeat as National Champions. I even mentioned that in earlier blogs about Alabama. I said from the start of the season that Alabama had a good team, but not as good as they were in 2011. The Tide had to replace a lot of great players, and I think they have done okay with that........but just okay. Apparently just 'okay' has been enough to get through a weaker schedule than previous seasons. If this same Alabama team had to navigate through the schedule they have had the last two or three seasons, this team wouldn't be undefeated.

Is Bama's defense better than their squad from 2011? Yes, and no. Yes, they have better numbers this season, which is crazy. However, it has been against vastly inferior teams. If you were to take both 2012 defense and the 2011 defense, and put them against the same schedule, the 2011 defense would be much better than their current defense. Don't get me wrong, Alabama's defense is very good, but they haven't had the tests that they had in previous seasons.

The Crimson Tide look like they will cruise into the BCS Title game. They haven't had the obstacles this season, like other seasons. Maybe they deserve the easier road. They have been the dominant program in the last 3 years, and maybe that's starting to pay-off. For all the 'Bama/SEC Haters' out there, if you don't like it, then knock them off their throne. Until a team from another conference wins the BCS Title, the SEC is going to continue to get more respect than they might deserve. Until then, DEAL WITH IT.
