Week 1 BCS Projections and Reader Questions

Who will be #1 in First BCS Poll?

First, I want you to go back a few segments. I wrote about the Alabama controversy, and the real possibility that they wouldn't be ranked #1 in the first BCS poll. I got plenty of feedback about that segment. Much of it was criticism for being biased and being an SEC 'hater'.

Well, guess what? This week's projections have given my idea traction. While many of you SEC fans won't like it, you can't deny the facts. Alabama is projected to land at #5 in the computer rankings. Now, don't skew what I am saying here. The human voters will still have Alabama at #1. The BCS Rankings will most likely have Alabama at #1, but there is still that chance that they may slip to #2 or #3. The computer rankings factor in strength of schedule. Oddly enough, the computers like Florida's SEC wins more than they like ALL of Bama's wins, and rightfully so. Alabama has yet to play a good team.

At the start of the season it was thought that Georgia had the easiest schedule. Obviously, South Carolina proved to be pretty tough. However, that was the only game that looked tough for Georgia. The rest of their schedule is easy. For Alabama? They don't play South Carolina, Florida, or Georgia. What? How did they get away with that one? Alabama has LSU and Mississippi State on their schedule. Those two games are considered their toughest games? Listen up Bama fans......... It is very possible that Alabama will have not played a single team ranked in the top 15 by the end of the regular season.

If that holds true, what does that mean for the BCS polls? You will see Alabama continue to fall in the computer rankings. There is the real chance that the computers could have Bama at #8 by the end of the season, and have a couple ONE LOSS teams in front of them. While Bama can continue to fool the human voters, they can't fool the computers. Are they a good football team? YES! I am not saying they are a bad team or that they are overrated. What I AM saying is that their schedule is hurting them. We can talk all day about Notre Dame being overrated, but the facts don't lie. Notre Dame has a better qaulity schedule. We are SIX weeks into the season and Alabama hasn't played a ROAD game yet. SIX WEEKS IN, and they have played: Michigan, Arkansas, Florida Atlantic, Ole Miss, and Western Kentucky. For some reason, that impresses human voters.

My poll question will remain the same this week: Who deserves to be ranked  #1 in the First BCS Poll of the 2012 season.

  Reader Questions Segment

Only two questions to answer this week.

Timothy writes: With FSU losing to N.C. State, what does that do for the ACC title race in the Atlantice division? Will FSU still get in?

Florida State should still make it to the ACC Title game, but they have a ton of work to do. Not only that, but they need NC State to lose.....FSU is no longer in control of getting to the ACC Title game. The Seminoles have to worry about their own schedule. They have to make fixes. They have to get back to playing the way they did against Clemson.
Also, look at this from another angle. If NC State wins out and plays in the ACC title game, it will destroy the ACC image (or whatever is left of that image). NC State playing for the ACC title would be the worst thing that could happen to the ACC. The last straw would be if they won. I know NC State fans are excited about winning and maybe playing for the conference title, but Clemson, V-Tech, and Miami don't want to see that. The ACC is on life-support and needs a good team to represent it in a BCS Bowl Game, and NC State is not that team.

Joshua writes: I have agreed with you about Alabama since the debate started. Could this be a year where an undefeated Bama team is #2 or #3 in the BCS going into Bowl season?

Wow, I don't know about being #3. They could land at #2, though. The major factor playing into this scenario is who they play in the SEC Championship. If they play an unbeaten Florida or South Carolina and they win, then I think Bama gets the #1 spot heading into the BCS game. Heading into the SEC Championship, though, Bama could easily be #3, or even #4. It also depends on other teams staying unbeaten. Oregon and West Virginia may have something to prove as well. We are half way through the season. Anything could happen. This last week proved that. Think of how great it would be if the playoff system kicked in this year.

Thanks for the questions, and I am sure there are more to come next week. BCS Ranking come out next week, and I am sure that will spark some debate. Check back later this week for the key games of the week and my picks.
