Week 2 is in the Books
This past weekend showed us why we love college football. It showed just how anything can happen on any given week. From UL-Monroe beating Arkansas, to UCLA taking down Nebraska. Check out our poll questions every week and post your comments at www.Facebook.com/collegefootball2day
Let's take a look back at some of what happened in Week 2.
A game that might not have had much attention was Utah vs Utah State. Another game where the unexpected strikes again. Utah State comes out on top. An instant classic that was settled in OT. 27-20
Speaking of Overtime..... perhaps the biggest shocker on Saturday, Arkansas falls at home in OT against UL-Monroe. Some fans will shrug this game off as just a crazy fluke, but I watched this game and it wasn't a fluke. Tyler Wilson was getting hit nearly every play. Much like Connor Shaw of South Carolina against Vanderbilt. But wait a minute, UL-Monroe isn't Vanderbilt. In a game where an SEC team is ranked in the top 10, I would expect the SEC speed and depth would easily take care of a game like this. UL-Monroe had no business being in this game. I know preseason ranks don't mean anything (hardly educated guesses) but this just goes to show that even the SEC isn't invincible. Keep this game in mind, as I am sure it will be brought up many times the rest of the season when talking about the SEC's record against non-conference foes.

Oregon State knocks off Wisconsin in a defensive battle. Wisconsin never looked in sync. The running game lacked all game long and Oregon State made just enough plays to hold off Wisconsin down the stretch. 10-7 BEAVERS!
What about Airforce vs Michigan? Wake up call to Michigan fans, in case you missed your first call against Alabama. I am not sure the Wolverines even realize the season has started yet based on what I have seen. The AP Poll had them ranked in the top 10. I didn't have them anywhere close to that at the start of the season and now many of you know why. If you missed this game, it was another close game that came down to the final minutes. I predicted after their loss to BAMA that teams would try to game-plan the same way Saban did against Denard Robinson. Granted, Airforce doesn't have the same caliber athletes, but you could tell Airforce tried many of the same strategies that the Tide used. Even playing at home in front of a loud supportive crowd, Michigan was only able to beat Airforce by 6 points. 31-25.
So, Alabama, how good does that win against Michigan look now? Certainly not as impressive as it was right after it happened. This Michigan team is unable to stop the run, and if they continue to play this way, they are going to lose more games.....especially in the BIG10.
Oklahoma State should have saved some points they scored in week one for their week two matchup (Ok State hung 84 points on their previous opponent). Arizona asks "how does it feel?" Arizona drops 59 points on Oklahoma state. KARMA? 59-38 Arizona dominates Oklahoma State. Good news for Oklahoma State, though.... they have out-scored opponents this season so far, 122-59. Too soon?

The season keeps getting longer, or so it seems that way for Penn Sate. The Nittany Lions came out strong early but managed to lose all its momentum as quick as they started with it. A missed extra point and several missed field goals, including a game winning attempt in the closing seconds sealed their fate in this one. Virginia played terrible most of the game, but Penn State found itself playing just bad enough to lose it. Cavaliers scrape by with a 17-16 win.
Duke at Stanford. Yes, I know, I had this game circled and even mentioned it last week as a game to watch. Who knew? Duke played very well the week before and looked strong against the Cardinal last year. But the trip to Stanford this season wasn't a delightful one at all. 50-13 Stanford rolls.
Vanderbilt at Northwestern. After suffering a very hard loss to South Carolina in week 1, Vandy was really hoping to rebound and get back on a path to a bowl game. That path just got a lot more difficult. Vandy just didn't look as sharp as expected. Maybe a little hangover from the tough loss a week prior, but I still would expect Vandy to win this game. They had a little more time to rest but that didn't seem to help. Either way, a loss is a loss. Northwestern holds off Vandy and wins 23-13. Vanderbilt hosts Presbyterian next week.
If you thought this week was a great weekend of college football, just look ahead to next week. Week 3 has some intriguing matchups.
Arizona State @ Missouri
Alabama @ Arkansas
Florida @ Tennessee
Wake Forest @ Florida State
North Carolina @ Louisville
Virginia at Georgia Tech
USC @ Stanford
Notre Dame @ Michigan State
And I have to add another game to that list. UL-Monroe @ Auburn. What would people say if TWO SEC teams lost to UL-Monroe? And this is very possible, given how bad Auburn has looked in their first two games. Sounds like a great poll question. Can UL-Monroe knock off Auburn for back-to-back SEC wins?
